We have a ray of hope. About an hour ago my nephew briefly woke up - of course at a time when his parents were in the waiting room rather than with him. He apparently told the nurse that his shoulder hurt, and was able to answer "Justin" when she asked if he knew his name. He then faded off again. Doctors are holding off on surgery since the bleeding and swelling in his brain hasn't increased again. From what I'm finding online, "lucid periods" are a positive thing and the majority of people who survive this type of injury have them. The whole family is seeing it as a positive since it is the first time he's gained awareness since shortly after the accident.
