In fact, even in his 40's, he looks striking.
Even more interesting, the same family who owns that painting owns the following portrait of the Earl of Southampton (3rd) who was Shakespeare's patron, and possibly lover. This link shows a painting reidentified as him, wearing quite a bit of makeup and looking very lovely.

Why do I have a sudden urge to write Bard/Earl slash? Must resist temptation...
