Teaching my first lesson in a "mainstream" classroom tomorrow morning. I can't wait 'till my student teaching is over next Friday...

It figures the partial- birth abortion ban (which may lead to the banning of all abortions) would pass while Bush is in office. Personally, I would have no problem with the ban as long as it allowed for exceptions in cases where the mother's life is in danger or the fetus is not viable.

Just some information - most partial birth abortions are performed on unborn infants who are ALREADY dead or will not be able to sustain life outside the womb. It is a very irresponsible and rare doctor who lets his patients use it as a form of birth control. For one thing, it's a medical procedure that can be potentially harmful to the mother. Most doctors treat the procedure as a stillbirth, but without forcing the mother to go through a long, painful induced delivery or c-section.

A year ago I would have thought this procedure so horrific that it should not be allowed under any circumstances. But a few months ago, one of the women in my pregnancy support group actually had to have this operation done. Her doctor recomended an amniocentisis due to an ultrasound that suggested a possible abnormality with her then 24 week pregnancy. A few hours after having it done she began running a high fever and was rushed to the emergency room. Once there, they discovered that the amnio needle had nicked her uterus and caused a toxic infection. The baby's heartbeat was already gone and she would have been dead with 5 hours if she hadn't gone to the hospital.

The baby had to be removed immediately so her infection could be treated and a partial birth abortion had to be performed. Afterwards they covered the baby's head to cover the surgical opening and allowed the parents to spend time with their dead baby, as part of the grieving process. An autopsy revealed no genetic abnormalities to have warrented the amniocentesis test :(

If the pro-lifers really believe that partial birth abortions are being used as "birth control" why haven't they ever allowed a clause allowing the procedure in cases where it is necessary to preserve a woman's life or when a child has no chance at survival?

*Just my 2 cents -I'm glad it's not something I've personally dealt with *
