I can't sleep...

Just wanted to note a sad anniversary: It has been ten years since Matthew Shepard was murdered.

Hmm... I'm working with my students on domestic violence this month, and obviously drunk driving last month - but maybe we can spend next month focusing on tolereance and hate crimes? I'd like to work it in somehow.

It's alwsys good to teach about the holocost and the attempt to exterminate Native Americans. It used to be required in school.

It still is at our school. I've never found a good text to work with students on the Native American experience, but I usually speak about prejudice towards Native people around Thanksgiving. My Mexican kids are really familiar with the idea since Natives from South America were treated pretty horrendously as well.

I also cover the Japanese Internment during WWII in spring. It's a good example of government changing the rules and showing prejudice, which many of my students are familiar with. About 1/2 my students are illegal, and I'm always scared schools will lose protection or be forced to report students.
