"God's in his heaven. All's right with the world..." (Or however the Browning quote goes ;)

We all stayed up last night to wait for the voting results, including Fox, who ran around most of the night yelling "Obama! Obama!" constantly. Apparently there is something about the name that small children like. It was such a relief when the final results came in. And yes, Tomu and I both voted. My hispanic and African students have been jubilantly shouting "Obama!" randomly in the middle of class today @_@ It was particularly apt since we were reading the end of "Huck Finn" and have been discussing slavery in America.

I was very disappointed that Prop 8 was passed in California, as well as the other measures throughout the country that banned gay marriage and adoption. I know maybe it is just too soon for any measures supporting gay rights to pass in most of the U.S. but it is still disappointing.

I guess it our job as parents to make sure our children recognize ALL marriage as valid so that change will come eventually. Fox already has books talking about all the "different kinds of families" but I think I will go find a few specifically gay and lesbian families as well. I know I can find some copies of "Tango makes Three" and "Heather has Two Mommies" if I search online. Maybe we'll even find a copy of the "Prince and Prince" book features in some of the "yes to Prop 8" ads.

We had to explain to Skye (my oldest) what Prop 8 meant, and why Mommy and Daddy were voting no. It helps that we live with a gay man who is very affectionate with his friends. It made it easier to explain to Skye what it meant because he already knew what being gay means.
