Sep. 13th, 2008 10:07 amReporting in from Fort Worth, Winds are just starting to hit her. My idiot husband went to work this morning, and I'm not sure who I want to kill more: him or his boss. Their business is located in an area known for flooding. He should be home around 3 p.m. or so...
We brought Mom here last night. It just feels safer. One benefit of living in a new subdivision is that there are no trees to fall on your house (or if they do, they are only 4 feet tall ;)
Our family in Houston seems to be fine. For those who don't know, my parents were longtime Houston relatives (my mom's family since the turn of the century) so I have lots of my mom's clan there. Thankfully, we aren't on speaking terms with many of them. We keep in touch with my aunts, some cousins and one Great uncle who is a great guy.
One of my most vivid memories as a child is when a hurricane came through Houston when I was 7 or so. There was extensive damage to our apartments, and I remember a huge tree that went through our neaighbor's apartment. I mainly remember waking up under mom and dad's bed, where mom had moved me for safety ;) My mom inherited an intense fear of storms from the grandmother who raised her, and I learned it from my mother. Fox and I spend most storms sitting in a bathtub or in the closet...
I find myself remembering when we lived in a 2nd floor apartment in Nac during 2001-2002, and watched cars in the parking lot floating by when a nearby creek rose. Or 2 years ago when our area of Fort Worth flooded and left many poor families, including some of my students, homeless. Some of the joys of living in the eastern areas of Texas...
Here's hoping we keep our electricity.
