On comics and fem fans.
Apr. 20th, 2008 10:51 amI grew up reading Marvel and DC comics. I remember visiting comic stores even at 7 years old, and reading Spiderman and Amythest:Princess of Gemworld. As I got older I moved on to independent comics and Japanese manga, but my heart has always been with plain old superhero comics. I'm still known to pick up an interesting looking X-men or Green Lantern comic every now and then. I love Whedon's run on Astonishing X-men, despite its many delays, simply because he does justice to my childhood heroine Kitty Pryde, and lets her finally get together with her first love (I cried at 12 when Piotr broke up with her ;)
So the ongoing trend of highly sexualized looking female characters turns me off, as does the constant deaths of other female characters simply to allow angst for the male characters. The girlfriend-in-the-refridgerator incident a few years ago was just the straw that broke the camel's back for a lot of female fans, including me. Except for rare exceptions, I've given up finding decent female characters, and spend a lot of time identifying with male characters in manga instead, because I can't identify with the 2 dimensional women in American comics. Period.
So I was overjoyed to see this on Scans daily today. I will now read Super Stupor religiously, I swear:
Just once, I want to see this happen.
I do adore www.girl-wonder.org as well ;)
